MaineHealth Institute for Research is composed of basic and clinical research laboratories and health services research that support the research training of scientists, and scientists-in-training (postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students), professionals (physicians) and medical trainees (residents, medical students).

Education & Training at MHIR

The research faculty at MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR) have academic appointments at University of Maine at Orono, and the Tufts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. We provide graduate research training opportunities at the PhD level through these institutions, with thesis research performed in our basic science laboratories at the Scarborough research facility.

Maine Medical Center is committed to providing continuing medical education (CME) and research opportunities for our medical staff and trainees. These opportunities include formal coursework, participation in clinical and basic research seminars,

The Center for Molecular Medicine at MHIR hosts a seminar series with internationally renowned research scientists in the biomedical sciences. Everyone is welcome to attend these seminars, and continuing education credits are offered for attendance.

The video below highlights a year-long internship for three high school students at MaineHealth Institute for Research.  Their internships focused on the anatomy and function of the cardiovascular system through experiencing and taking part in lab work done for the purpose of human health.
